Empathy is a sign of civilization.

– Milka Ivanova

My name is Milka Ivanova, I am 52 years old. I have been living in Greece permanently for the last 25 years and my lung cancer journey started in 2021, with a persistent cough, which I assumed was from smoking.

Truth is I was overwhelmed at that time, because of family issues.

I felt my body and soul exhausted and distressed.

The CT scan and pet scan confirmed the diagnosis. At that moment, I lost the ground under my feet.

And then I thought: you’re strong, you can do it! Go ahead!

I first told myself, I’m strong and I can fight this.

I’m sure everyone has hidden powers they do not even realize. When all seems hopeless, we can be heroes.

The question “Did you smoke?” was the first question I faced when people learned about my disease.

People who are just entering  their cancer journey need to be informed, they need to be given the psychological support that is so very important to cope with the disease.

I would like to say that I have been more of a passive smoker for many years than an active one. People need to become more educated, more aware and more empathetic towards people who are fighting against a serious disease.

It is a sign of civilisation.
